West Lynn is an electoral district of the Enderronian Parliament in New Plymouth, first contested at the 1990 federal election. It is named after the inner-city Borough of Lynn, and encompasses its western half.
The sitting member, since the 2014 federal election, is Terri Scott, a member of the Social Democratic Party.
History[]
West Lynn was created at the 1990 redistribution, in which the district of Lynn was abolished and split into East Lynn and West Lynn. West Lynn was proclaimed as a marginal SDP seat on paper, but was narrowly won at its first election by Hugh Markworth of the United Party. After a single term, he was soundly defeated by the Social Democrats' Kuan-lin Hsiung as part of the United Party's electoral wipeout in the 1994 federal election. Hsiung, a first-generation Taiwanese Enderronian, resigned from the Social Democrats in 1997 following disagreements over the party's policies regarding China and Taiwan, and was re-elected as an independent in 1998. He was in turn defeated by Social Democrat Colin Andersen in 2002, who resigned in 2004 following corruption charges. The Enderronian Greens' deputy leader, Jeremy Radford narrowly won the ensuing by-election, giving the party its first seat in Parliament. Although he lost the seat in the 2006 election, the Greens remain a strong contender in the electorate, having featured in the two-candidate-preferred count ever since.
